How do I clean greyish residue on my mixer beaters?

Don't worry if you see a greyish residue on your wire whisk beater from KitchenAid. Just see our cleaning advice and then follow the steps to remove it...

Why do I have residue on my beater?

If your wire whisk is not made of 100% stainless steel, then it is not dishwasher-safe. If you wash it in the dishwasher, or allow it to soak in the sink, it may start to oxidize and form a greyish residue. This greyish residue is not harmful, but it may discolour food items while you're mixing. When washing, it should be hand washed in hot sudsy water and towel-dried immediately. Do not allow to air dry.

If you prefer to put your beater in the dishwasher, KitchenAid offers 100% stainless steel whisks for all models, which are dishwasher safe. You can shop accessories here

Which whisks have aluminium?

The following standard wire whisks have an aluminium head and are therefore not dishwasher safe:

5K452WW

5K5A2WW

5KSM35WW

How do I get rid of the residue?

  • Soak the whisk in hot soapy water and scrub with a nylon scrubber to remove any residue build-up.
  • We also recommend using a powdered cleaning agent, specially designed to remove oxidization.
  • The beater will not be as shiny as it originally was, but the thin layer of oxidization will be removed, and will not discolour foods.
